Hypnotherapy for Confidence and Self-Sabotage in Brixton and Online
You are not lazy, weak or fundamentally flawed. Part of you is working very hard to keep you safe, and it may be doing that by holding you back.
Do you recognise yourself here?
- You put things off, then criticise yourself for putting them off
- You know what you want to do, and somehow do not do it
- Imposter syndrome tells you that you are about to be found out
- You say yes to keep the peace and then feel resentful or invisible
- You compare yourself to everyone and always come up short
- You are held back by a voice that sounds suspiciously like someone from your past
If so, you are not alone, and it is not a life sentence.
Why we sabotage ourselves
Self-sabotage looks like a problem, but it usually started as a solution. Somewhere along the way, a part of you decided that staying small, staying quiet or staying busy would keep you safe from rejection, failure or criticism. That decision made sense at the time. The trouble is that it is still running the show years later.
One thing I say to clients a lot is that it is something you do, not something you are. You are not a procrastinator, you are not a people-pleaser, you are not ‘just not confident’. You have patterns, and patterns can change.
Questioning the story
Low confidence is often built on big statements that sound like facts. ‘Everyone else finds this easy.’ ‘I am not the kind of person who…’ ‘A normal person would have sorted this by now.’ In sessions we gently cross-examine those statements. Who says so? What is the evidence? When did I first start to believe this? You will often find that a belief you thought was the truth is really a fear in a very convincing costume.
I have done this for myself too. I once put off an overdue and important legal meeting for over a decade because it made me anxious. Knowing better did not help. Facing it, and noticing what my body was doing, did.
Parts work and hypnosis
Using IFS-informed work and hypnosis, we meet the parts of you that hold you back. The inner critic, the pleaser, the perfectionist, the part that wants to hide. We find out what each one is afraid of and what it wants for you, and then help them take on a gentler role. As that happens, confidence stops being something you have to force. It simply becomes available.
Many of the women I work with have spent years managing other people’s expectations, and have come to feel emotionally silenced or unsure of themselves. If that sounds like you, this work can help you reconnect with your own voice.
What to expect
We start with a free 15-minute consultation to talk through what is going on and whether I can help. Sessions last one hour to an hour and a half, at my clinic in Brixton (500m from the tube, overlooking Brockwell Park) or online via Zoom. Most clients notice a shift within two to three sessions and work with me for six to twelve in total. Clinical hypnotherapy is nothing like stage hypnosis: you stay awake, aware and in control throughout. Read more about sessions and fees or about me.
Frequently asked questions
Is low confidence something hypnotherapy can really change?
In my experience, yes, because it works on the beliefs and patterns underneath the feeling, not just the surface behaviour. I cannot promise a result, but most clients feel a noticeable shift within a handful of sessions.
What is imposter syndrome?
It is the persistent feeling that you are not as capable as people think and will be found out. It is very common among capable, conscientious people, and it responds well to the kind of belief and parts work described here.
Will I have to dig through my childhood?
Only if it is useful. We look at where a belief came from when that helps, but the focus is on practical change in the present.
Does it work for people-pleasing?
Yes. People-pleasing is often a protective part trying to keep you safe, and we can work with it respectfully so that you can set boundaries without guilt.
